Obituary


Dr. Walter M. Platt, Jr. of South Dartmouth passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital on Sunday, July 12, 2020 after 99 wonderful years of life and just three months shy of his one hundredth birthday. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Walter and Ida Platt. He was a long time resident of South Dartmouth where he raised his family along with his wife the late Dr. Helen (McCormick ) Platt, whom he met at Tufts Medical School. He was also a longtime companion of the late Mrs. Charlotte Babbitt.

He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during the Korean War where he attained the rank of captain and he practiced as an ophthalmologist in New Bedford until the age of 89.

Survivors include his three children Lisa DeLand, Ann Correia, both of South Dartmouth, and Walter M Platt III of New Bedford. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren and three great granddaughters.

A private service and burial will be held in celebration of his life.
