Obituary

Brian F. Chiango, age 63, of Stoneham passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2020. Raised and educated in East Boston, he was the son of the late Frank and Eileen (Humphrey) Chiango. Before moving to Stoneham in 2016, Brian and his wife Eve M. (Shuman) Chiango were longtime residents of Medford.

Brian and Eve were married in 1980, and shared a life of love and joy with each other and their sons. Brian was the proud and devoted father of Adam Francis Chiango of Stoneham, Douglas Ross Chiango of Medford, and Brendan Reed Chiango of Stoneham. He was the always loving brother of Steven Chiango of Lynn, Kelly Fung and her husband James of Medford, and Leslie Newhook and her husband Robert of Pelham, New Hampshire. Brian is also survived by his cherished aunt Sandra Chiango of Revere, and many loving nieces, nephews, and family members.

Brian enjoyed a long and highly successful career at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) in Boston. He started in the 1970s as a student of the radiologic technology program and became a staff radiology technologist upon graduation. A natural leader, Brian was soon named chief radiology technologist. In 1992 he was promoted to BWH Radiology’s Director of Administration and Finance by B. Leonard Holman, MD, Chair of Radiology. Under the succeeding Chair, Steven E. Seltzer, MD, Brian was named Executive Director of BWH Radiology, a post he held from 2001 to 2017. From 2014 to 2017, Brian also served as Vice Chair of the Department of Radiology for Brigham and Women’s Physicians Organization. Over these 25 years Brian helped guide the growth and success of the radiology enterprise on the main campus and at new ambulatory sites. The BWH Radiology Department grew markedly in size, complexity, quality, and stature, in no small part due to Brian’s efforts and major contributions.

Brian’s accomplishments at the Brigham reflect his exceptional skills, determination, intelligence and passion for his work. More importantly, Brian treated each patient with attention and compassion and each colleague with respect and support. He was a mentor to many and a friend to even more. He maintained his energy, optimism and humor through the changing healthcare landscape.

After leaving BWH in 2017, Brian worked in an executive role for Alliance Healthcare, applying his experience and insights to healthcare challenges across the United States and internationally. Brian earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Management with Dean’s List Distinctions from Northeastern University in 1986, and later obtained his MBA from the Executive Program at the Sawyer School of Suffolk University in 1992.
