Lynn: Althea M. Soares age 53 of Lynn, died Saturday at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, following a long illness. She was the daughter of Lydia (Shand) Soares of Lynn and the late Clovis J. A. Soares who passed away February 10th of this year.
Born and raised in Jamaica she attended Church Teachers College in Jamaica and taught school before moving to Lynn with her family in 1978. A graduate of Salem State College she received her degree in elementary education, but eventually left teaching to work for General Electric in Lynn. Ms Soares did volunteer work for My Brother’s Table, tutored at the Zion Baptist Church in Lynn and did the annual Walk for Hunger. A member of the AFLCIO Local 201, she retired from General Electric in 2002 for health reasons. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by 3 sisters: Desreen Johnson and Patricia Soares both of Lynn, Marcia Soares-Benalfew of Peabody, 4 brothers: Glendon, Devon and Dossain Soares all of Lynn, Jack Soares of Salem, also many nieces and nephews.
Her funeral will be on Friday, February 24, 2006, at 9 am from the Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St., Salem [Rt. 114 / 1-A] followed by her funeral service in the Washington Street Baptist Church, 256 Washington St., Lynn at 11 am, with an hour of visitation prior in church.
