Obituary


Virgil Young, 94, of Ben Hill County, Georgia, died Wednesday, June 3, 2020, at his residence.

Graveside services will be held.

Mr. Young was born February 5, 1926, to the late Luther & Lila Mae Williams Young. He graduated high school and taught there briefly. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the USS Belleau Wood (CVL-24). He also worked as a cook in the Navy. Mr. Young was a lifelong farmer and truck driver. He enjoyed gardening and will be remembered for his large mustard plants and tall okra stalks. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved fox hunting and fishing. He loved spending time with his family. He was a very faithful member of New Bethel Holiness Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and sang in the choir until he was 90.

He is survived by his children and their spouses: Faye Pender of Atlanta, Ollie & Julian Tucker of Fitzgerald, Josie & Scott Barrett of Freeport, Florida, Edsel & Janice Young of Wray, Carlotta & Lamar Goodman of Wray and Jason & Becki Ledbetter of Wray; step-children: Rhonda Croft & Ray Beard of Fitzgerald and Keith & Anita Faye Young of Fitzgerald; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Carroll Young of Fitzgerald. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Juanita Spell Young; his second wife, Willow Ree Spell Young; and three brothers: Jake Young, Travis Young, and Melvin Young.
