George Souza, 80, of New Bedford died Friday February 17, 2006 at the V.A. Medical Center in Providence, Rhode Island. He was the companion of the late Elizabeth "Betsy" Lavertu.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Manuel Souza Rapozo and Mary (Costa) Rapozo, he lived in New Bedford for all of his life.
He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.
Mr. Souza was formerly employed as a machinist at Morse Cutting Tools until his retirement.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors include a son, Manuel Souza of New Bedford; 3 daughters, Cheryl Ventura of Acushnet, June Marie of Fall River and Cindy Reposa of Pennsylvania; a stepdaughter, Sherry Sylvia of New Bedford; a niece with whom he resided, Brenda Lavertu of New Bedford; 2 sisters, Irene Ponte of New Bedford and Helen Nunes of Florida; a brother, Louis Rapozo of New Bedford; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, Wednesday February 22, 2006 at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 9 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday February 21, 2006 from 6-8 PM. Burial with military honors will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
