Obituary

New Bedford – Cecelia T. (Mendes) Rose, age 82, of New Bedford passed away on Monday, May 18, 2020 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Born in Freetown, MA she was the beloved daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Lopes) Mendes and was also the longtime companion of the late Francis L.G. Haddocks.

Cecelia was formerly employed as manager of the United Social Club until her retirement. She enjoyed cooking for family and friends and passing it down to her grandkids. She had a vast collection of elephants from all over the world, which she displayed proudly. Cecelia enjoyed watching the Red Sox and was an avid Mookie Betts fan. She also enjoyed watching old westerns.

Cecelia always welcomed everyone into her home with open arms and made sure to let them know that they could visit her anytime. But her greatest pride and joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed telling them stories and listening to them tell theirs. Their enthusiasm always put a smile on her face. She was so proud of them all.

Cecelia is survived by her children, Deborah Gonsalves and her husband Kevin, Brian K. Rose, Scott Rose, all of New Bedford and Donald C. Rose, Jr. and his wife Laura of Martha’s Vineyard; her daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Rose; step-children, Belinda Bulgar and her husband Brennan of New Bedford and Donna Robertson and her husband Kevin of Dartmouth; grandchildren, India and her husband Sterling of Martha’s Vineyard, Brett and his wife Samantha of Florida, Kellen, Taylor, Jasmine, Madison, Marcel and his wife Stephanie, Shaunte and her husband Calvin, Leandra, Tevin, Rayna and Briana; great-grandchildren, Kai, Kamryn, Mia and Kendrick; as well as her sister, Adeline Delgado of Georgia.

Cecelia was also the mother of the late Ronald Rose and sister of the late Mae Pina, Diana “Nana” Wheatley, Dorothy “Dolly” Burr, George Mendes, Joseph “Juny” Mendes and Fred Mendes.

Cecelia’s funeral services will be private for immediate family, due to the current mandated restrictions on public gatherings in regards to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
