Earle M. Carter, Jr., 53, of New Bedford died July 9, 2002 unexpectedly at Rhode Island Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
He was the husband of Susan (Bettencourt) Carter, and son of Florentina (Tagle) Carter of Dartmouth and Earle M. Carter, Sr. of Springfield.
Mr. Carter was born in New Bedford and had lived in New Bedford for all of his life. He was a 1968 graduate of New Bedford High School, where he was on the football and track teams. He attended Bristol Community College and Bridgewater State College.
He was a member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church in New Bedford.
Mr. Carter was formerly employed as a firefighter for the City of New Bedford Fire Department for 21 years until his retirement.
He served in the U.S. Army in Korea along with two of his brothers during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife; his parents; 2 sons, Earle M. "Bo" Carter, III, and Trent M. Carter, both of New Bedford; 2 daughters, Rebecca M. Carter and Tobie Joy Carter, both of New Bedford; 4 brothers, James T. Carter of Grenada Hills, CA, Ronelino Carter and Vernon Carter, both of New Bedford, and Roberto Carter of Ludlow; 4 sisters, Melody Carter-Walls, of Springfield, Dawne Botelho and Kimberly Carter, both of New Bedford, and Priscilla Hagins of Simpsonville, S.C.; an uncle, Rev. Vernon Carter of Cambridge, Mass.; 3 grandchildren, Coryana Jarea Pina, Jainehya Casanas, and Tameron Mitchell Carter; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was the brother of the late Ernesto Carter.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service in the Bethel A.M.E. Church, 532 County St., New Bedford Monday, July 15, 2002 at 10 AM, followed by burial in Rural Cemetery.Visiting hours at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Sunday, July 14, 2002 from 4-7 PM.
