DUBLIN, Pa. — Alice Billington Rex, 81, formerly of South Dartmouth, Mass., died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, at Alterra Clarebridge Cottage after a period of declining health. She was the widow of Donald Hay Rex.
Born in New Bedford, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Edward and Lelia Conway Billington and stepdaughter of the late Helen Slater Billington. She was a graduate of Dartmouth High School and attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine, for three years until her marriage to Don, her high school sweetheart.
After raising six children, she worked in the family business, Rex Monuments in New Bedford and Fall River, Mass., for many years.
Upon retirement, she became a volunteer at St. Luke's Hospital and the New Bedford Whaling Museum, where she gave walking tours of the city through the museum's docent tour guide program. She spent winters in Florida with her husband and enjoyed travels with him visiting her grandchildren.
Mrs. Rex and her husband were among the founding members of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in South Dartmouth, which she served in various capacities throughout her life, including the altar guild.
For a few years, she lived in Fairhaven, Mass., and restored an old home in the center of town. Five years ago, when her health declined, she moved to Pennsylvania to be near her daughter Elizabeth.
Survivors include three sons, Bruce Rex of New Bedford, Donald Rex Jr. of Taylors, S.C., and Thomas Rex of South Dartmouth; three daughters, Nancy Rex Earnheart of Tucson, Ariz., Susan Rex Adams of Rockville, Md., and Elizabeth Rex Mackie of Perkasie; five grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.
Her memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, February 17, 2006, in St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 351 Elm St., South Dartmouth, Ma. 02748. Visiting hours are Thursday from 5-8 p.m.
It is suggested remembrances be made in her name to her church at 351 Elm St., So. Dartmouth 02748 or to the Alzheimer's Association, 331 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472. Burial in So. Dartmouth Cemetery is private.
