Obituary

October 5, 1928 – April 25, 2020

Lukitsh, Mary Margaret (Rooney) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 5th, 1928. She was the oldest of four children: Daniel (who predeceased her), Ruth (married to William Shea) and Regina (married to Joseph Brendle). Known to family and friends throughout her life as Honey, she attended Annunciation Grammar School and High School and graduated in June 1946. After graduation she worked as a secretary at the Pittsburgh Parking Authority and, in a few years, started working for the President of the Yellow Cab Company.

Mary Margaret met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Lukitsh at Annunciation’s Summer Camp where she was a counselor and he was business manager. They met in 1951, were engaged in 1952, and married in 1953. They had three children, Joanne, Nancy, and Carol. The family moved to Garden City, New York in 1966 when Bob took the position of Vice President of Finance and Administration at Nassau Community College. She returned to secretarial work after her daughters went to college, working at Endo Pharmaceuticals in Garden City. Riding the wave of pharmaceutical company acquisitions and divestitures, she worked at DuPont, DuPont-Merck and Bristol-Myers Squibb without ever changing jobs or moving to a different building. She finally stopped working at 75 because the Garden City facility closed.

Honey was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and friend. Her life centered on her faith, her family, and her friends. She was an avid bridge player, church and school volunteer and enthusiastic traveler. The family home in Garden City was a welcoming place to all, and a haven for family members. Particularly after Bob died in 1991 she enjoyed spending time with her sisters, daughters, and family, and socializing with friends at Leo’s Restaurant in Garden City. Through time with family she also came to be a school sports and dance enthusiast, MSNBC devotee, and, in a shock to many, including herself, a favorite of dogs all over. Honey made friends wherever she went and will be missed by many.

She is survived by her daughters, Joanne, Nancy (and Murray Metcalfe) and Carol (Steven Yahoodik), and by her grandchildren - David Yahoodik and his wife Erin and their son, Zachary Joseph; Sarah Yahoodik; and Claire Metcalfe. Honey is also survived by her sisters Ruth and Jean (and Joe Brendle), her many nieces and nephews, and their families.

Donations in Mary Margaret’s name can be made to Elizabeth Seton Residence in Wellesley, Massachusetts, where she spent her final years, enjoying her time with wonderful and loving caregivers and with many, many visits by all her family members. Services were private.
