Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Thelma M. (Pleasant) Smith, 95, of the Sixteen Acres section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Monday, April 20, 2020. She passed into Eternal Life at Chestnut Hill of East Longmeadow surrounded by her wonderful caregivers and all of the memories that she loved and cherished. She was born in Colrain, MA on January 14, 1925, a beloved daughter of the late Wayne E. and Eva (Boullie) Pleasant. She was raised in Turners Falls, graduated from Turners Falls High School and worked as the Head Hostess for 15 years at the Colony Club in Springfield and retired in 1980. She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in Springfield. During her leisure time, she enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and loved to travel, especially to Marco Island, Florida and Wells, Maine. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and her many friends. The courage and determination she showed having survived both breast and brain cancer proved to be a special inspiration to everyone around her. Thelma was admired for her outstanding example, as wife, mother, grandmother, aunt or friend and she was always willing to lend an ear to those in need. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Earl N. Smith who was Called Home on April 2, 2001. They were married on October 30, 1948 at the former Saint Anne Church in Turners Falls and were blessed with over 52 years of happiness together. She leaves her four loving sons, Matthew E. Smith and his wife, JoAnn, of Springfield, Garrett P. Smith and his wife, Judith, of Philadelphia, PA, Douglas J. Smith and his wife, Deborah, of Westfield and Andrew E. Smith and his wife, Julie, of East Hartford, CT; her 13 cherished grandchildren, Kristie Dulude and her husband, Kenneth, Jennifer Padilla currently serving in the United States Coast Guard and her husband, Brandon, Matthew Smith and his wife, Katie, Judson Smith and his wife, Elizabeth, Stephanie Desjardins and her husband, Garret, Kimberly Smith, Ryan Smith, Meghan Smith, Bradford Smith and his wife, Stephanie, Connor Smith who is currently serving in the United States Army, Graham Smith, Edward Smith and Eva Smith; her 13 cherished great-grandchildren; and her many dear nephews and nieces including her dear goddaughter, Tina “Pleasant “ Lankowski; her dear first cousin and close friend, Priscilla Rich and her husband, Clay; and her dear extended family members and friends including her close friend, Annabelle Broderick. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her two dear brothers and sister-in-law, Edward W. Pleasant and Francis R. Pleasant and his wife, Helen; her dear sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Mieg McGrath her husband, William Mieg; and her dear sister-in-law, Etta Momrow. Her Funeral Services will be private and Burial will be private at Hillcrest Park Cemetery in Springfield. Her funeral arrangements are entrusted to the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the D’Amour Cancer Center, Baystate Health Systems, 280 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01199.
