Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Dorothy (Hewitt) Fenton, 95, formerly of Oklahoma Street in the East Springfield section of Springfield and currently a resident of The Wellington at Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020. She passed into Eternal Life at the Wellington surrounded by her wonderful caregivers and all the memories she loved and cherished. She was born in Lynn, Massachusetts on November 3, 1924, a beloved daughter of the late Stephen Hewitt and Josephine (Shanahan) Hewitt. She was raised in Lynn and graduated from Saint Mary High School. She furthered her education in Boston and enlisted in the United States Army during World War II. She was a Surgical Technician with the Headquarters 28th WAC Hospital and attained the rank of Technician Fifth Grade. She received the American Service Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. She met her beloved husband, John M. Fenton, while serving in the United States Army. On June 1, 1946, in Lynn, Massachusetts, they were married and blessed with over 55 years of happiness together. Together they moved to Springfield and settled on Hungry Hill where they began their life together. They later moved to Oklahoma Street in East Springfield where they lived for many years. Dorothy was previously employed by the former US Envelope Company in Springfield and later worked as a longtime travel agent at Peter Pan and Carroll Travel, both in Springfield. She finished her career as a Travel Agent and Manager of Group Sales at Doyle Travel in Chicopee. Following the passing of her beloved husband, John M. Fenton on June 7, 2001, Dorothy moved to the Spanish Lakes Country Club Village in Fort Pierce, Florida where she lived for ten years before retunring to Springfield in 2013. She was a longtime communicant and active volunteer of the former Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield where she was a member of the Our Lady of Hope Women’s Guild. She was a member of the John Boyle O’Reilly Ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion Post 430, both in Springfield. During her leisure time, Dorothy enjoyed traveling, reading, writing and composing poetry. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her two dear sisters, Eleanor Morgan and Mary Nolan. She leaves her two loving children, Dorothy A. Wrisley and her husband, Barry, of Springfield and Paul F. Fenton and his partner, Gerri, of Worcester and Fort Pierce, FL; her two cherished grandchildren, Kelly M. Flynn and her husband, John, of Marblehead, MA and Michael P. Fenton and his wife, Michelle, of Potomac, MD; her five cherished great-grandchildren whom she adored, Ava, Miles and Lucy Flynn and Chase and Jack Fenton; her loving sister, Anne M. Pelletier of Lynn; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, numerous friends and extended members of the Hewitt and Fenton families. A Service of Committal with United States Army Military Honors will be held at a later date to be announced in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. Her funeral arrangements are entrusted to the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107.
