Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Vasileke “Bessie” (Manioudakis) Metzidakis, 88, of the Atwater Park section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, April 1, 2020. She passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born at home on Springfield Street in Chicopee on June 9, 1931, a beloved daughter of the late Evangelos Manioudakis and Despina (Antonovardake) Manioudakis. At a young age, her parents went back to Gerakari, Crete, Greece where she was raised. She returned to the area and settled in Springfield around 1946 where she lived for the remainder of her life. She was a wonderful cook and baker and was always making delicious Greek dinners and pastries for her family, her church and her many friends. Proud of her Greek Heritage, she was an active communicant of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield where she volunteered and was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society. She was also a member of the Proodos Chapter of the Cretan Ladies Society. Bessie was a beautiful person whose smile would light up a room. Most of all, she truly loved her family, her church and her many friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and soul mate, Harry J. Metzidakis who was Called Home on May 30, 2016. They were married on October 24, 1948 at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield and were blessed with over 67 years of happiness together. She leaves her two devoted children, Angelo H. Metzidakis of Springfield and Katina Metzidakis of Houston, TX; her cherished grandson whom she adored, Matthew C. Skinner and his wife, Erica D’Eramo, of Houston, TX; her loving brother, George Manioudakis and his wife, Constance, of Chicopee; her loving sister, Calliope Hoffman of Longmeadow; her loving sister-in-law, Katherine Metzidakis of Agawam; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, numerous friends and extended family members. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her loving brother, Constantine Manioudakis who was Called Home on May 27, 1998. Her funeral and burial will be private.
