Obituary

John Joseph Shaw, 86, of Fairhaven died Monday July 8, 2002 at home. He was the husband of Mary Mullen (White) Shaw. They were totally devoted to each other during their 58 years of marriage.

Born in South Boston, son of the late Dominic and Eleanora L. (Kalvelis) Shauchunas, he had lived in Randolph and Middleboro for many years before moving to Fairhaven in 1983. He was graduated from Mechanic Arts High School in Boston in 1933, and received a certificate in mechanical engineering from the Lowell Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge in 1941.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Fairhaven.

Mr. Shaw was formerly employed as a chicken and dairy farmer at the Shaw Family Farm in Middleboro for 15 years. Prior to that he had been a gear cutter for Grant Gear Works in South Boston for 21 years before retiring in 1955. In his youth, he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Mr. Shaw was a member of the Ayrshire Club in Middleboro and the Massachusetts Cage Bird Association. His lifelong interest was in raising and breeding canaries. He also enjoyed gradening and reading and maintained an extensive library on a multitude of subjects.

Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, John Peter Shaw and his wife Mary Ann of Fairhaven and Joseph Richard Shaw and his wife Suzanne of Salt Lake City, Utah; 4 grandchildren, Joel Shaw of Randolph, Damon Shaw and Rebecca Shaw, both of Fairhaven, and Joanne Shaw of Salt Lake City; a nephew and 2 nieces.He was the brother of the late Frank D. Shaw and Antosie Agurkis.

His Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday July 12, 2002 at 10 AM in St. Joseph's Church, Fairhaven. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visiting hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Community Nurse & Hospice Care, P.O. Box 831, Fairhaven, MA 02719.
