CHARLES R. DOWD, SR., age 92, of Hingham, formerly of Quincy, died on Friday, Feb. 10th at his home after a long illness. Mr. Dowd was born in Jamaica Plain and lived most of his life in Quincy, before coming to Hingham four years ago. For many years, Mr. Dowd was a firefighter on the Boston Fire Department. The first fire he responded to as a professional firefighter was the famous Coconut Grove Fire on November 28, 1942, in which 492 people lost their lives. He retired in 1976.
Husband of the late Mary (Nee) Dowd, he was the father of Michael J. Dowd of Hingham, the late Charles R. Dowd, Jr. and the late Nancy Peppino. He was also predeceased by his longtime companion Antoinette Tocchio.
The funeral services and interment are to be private. Visiting hours and flowers omitted by request.
