Software Engineer and Musician
NEWTON, NH – Gregory Bernard Barlay, age 49, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 20th, at his home. He was born in Winchester, MA and raised in Billerica, MA by his parents Siegmar and Lori Schmidt (Barlay). He attended Billerica High School and went on to earn a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science from UMass Lowell in 2000. He had worked for almost twenty years at Draeger Medical in North Andover, as a software engineer for the manufacturing of heart monitoring medical devices.
Greg relished his role as a father to his beloved son, Mitchell Gregory Barlay, enjoyed spending time with him, singing in the car, and encouraging his musical abilities. He also had fun shooting hoops with his son and the action of the sport. The highlights of summers were spent at the family July 4th party, Salisbury Beach and in Harwichport with Mitchell and family. He was a talented and accomplished musician who played guitar, piano, and drums, and also had a great voice. He played in several bands over the years, loved all kinds of music, and was especially fond of the Beatles. His hobbies were collecting vintage music albums, watching classic movies such as Star Wars, chess, basketball, and selling on eBay. He was very hands on and mechanically inclined, and had a natural talent to bring new life to anything in need of repair. Often he rebuilt guitars and amplifiers. Greg was detail oriented and a perfectionist with the goal to accomplish whatever he set his mind to.
Greg leaves behind his beloved son, Mitchell, his loving parents, Siegmar and Lori Schmidt, his former wife and best friend, Melody Jean Lilly, loving siblings, Claire and husband John Silveri, Monica McCarthy, Stephen Barlay, Brian Schmidt and his wife Becca, and Imi Barlay. He also leaves behind his loving nieces and nephews, Kendra Silveri-Ryder, Alex & Lucas Silveri, Nathan, Taylor & Emily McCarthy, Isaac, Mary & Heidi Schmidt, family in Germany, and friends throughout Southern NH, and the Merrimack Valley.
Greg was quiet natured, easy going, and kind. He will be in our hearts and minds forever. Our lives will never be the same without him. We love you Greg!
