Versa Mae Law, 91, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Saturday, March 21, 2020, at her residence.
Graveside services will be held 11 AM, Monday, March 23, 2020, at Lax Holiness Cemetery in Coffee County, Georgia with the Rev. Brad Luke and the Rev. Kevin Vickers officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the cemetery.
Mrs. Law was born July 18, 1928, in Levy County, Florida, to the late John Wesley “Jack” & Nealie Hinton Luke. She attended and graduated from the Martha Berry School for Girls on a scholarship she received after reading about the school in a magazine and applying. She worked in the shipyards in Savannah during World War II building bomb casings. Mrs. Law worked as a seamstress at Fitzgerald Underwear for 35 years. She was a devoted farm wife and worked in a grapefruit canning plant in Groveland, Florida following harvest season. She was always a hard worker who picked cotton, harvested tobacco, and hoed peanuts and watermelons. Mrs. Law loved cooking and will be remembered for her cakes. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.
She is survived by her four children: Carolyn Sandiford of Fitzgerald, Gary & Sandra Law of Fitzgerald, Marilyn Floyd of Dry Branch, and Roger & Jennie Law of Douglas; grandchildren: Anthony & Tami Sandiford, Wanda & Wesley Kimbrell, Debbie Browning, Jeff & Teraye Law, Starlet & J.T. Ripstein, Bobby Harper, Rhonda Little, Sheila & Clay Wood, Jamie Floyd, Michelle Batten, Michael Batten, Shane Ables, Chad Ables, and Renee Brown; 25 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; siblings: Curtis Luke of Willacoochee, Ottis Luke of Willacoochee, James Luke of Winter Haven. Florida, Elmer Luke of Willacoochee, Jewell Moore of Ocala, Florida, Voncile Cavender of Graniteville, South Carolina, Brenda Jewell of Ty Ty, and Butler Luke of Ocilla. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Raymond Law; two sons-in-law, Waldo Sandiford and Robert Floyd; and siblings: Doris Merritt, John Luke, Cleo Luke, Dorothy Calloway, Inez Crosby, and Lucious Luke.
