Obituary

Milton Joseph Peters, 76, of New Bedford passed away peacefully March 7, 2020 after a long illness. He was the son of the late Emily Barros Peters and the late Joseph V. Peters.

Born in New Bedford, Milt lived most of his life in New Bedford, Dartmouth, and Rochester. He served in the U.S. Navy, and was stationed in many ports around the world, including Spain, where his first child, Dawn, was born. He was employed for decades as a diesel mechanic, and eventually service manager and parts manager, at D. N. Kelly Shipyard in Fairhaven (now Fairhaven Shipyard).

He had many hobbies, including photography, and aviation. Once a private pilot, he enjoyed building and working on planes with his friend Hans, with whom he shared fond memories of going to fly-ins at OshKosh in Wisconsin and Sun ‘n Fun in Florida. His photography hobbies included taking many landscape pictures, and video-taping family events. But he was most proud of his children, whom he adored. He especially enjoyed going to his daughter Kaeli’s musical concerts and school plays, and watching his son Jadon set sail on sea terms as a Mass Maritime cadet. He proudly served as a Boy Scout leader and mentor with Jadon’s troop. During his final days, Milt smiled as he listened to Kaeli sing to him at his bedside.

He spent his later years with his companion Janet Maziarz, a dear, loving friend since childhood. He enjoyed their many trips to New Hampshire to see the foliage and ride the train to Mt. Washington.

He is the former husband of Jill Peters and the late June Voisine. He leaves behind his two sons, Jadon Peters of Fairhaven, and Michael Peters of New Bedford; and his two daughters, Dawn Cabral of Fall River, and Kaeli Peters of Fairhaven. He also leaves behind 4 grandchildren: Corey, Danielle, Taro, and Michael.

His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday March 11, 2020 at 11:30 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
