Obituary

WELLS, ME—G. Douglas Sullivan, Jr., former Deputy Superintendent of the Lowell Public School System, died Sunday evening, at his home in Maine, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was the husband of Mary (Coakley) Sullivan, to whom he was married for 46 years.

He was born in Lowell, on January 23, 1935, a son of the late G. Douglas and Nora (Cummings) Sullivan, and was graduated from Lowell Public Schools, Lowell High School, Lowell State Teacher’s College and Boston University.

Mr. Sullivan was a United States Navy Veteran during the Korean Conflict.

He served as a Lowell Police Officer before he began his career as an educator. At the time of his death he was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, in Wells, ME.

Surviving him besides his wife are a daughter and son-in-law: Attorney Patricia Sullivan Talty and her husband Dr. Francis Talty, of Lowell; three sons and two daughters-in-law: G. Douglas Sullivan, III, of Lawrence; former Lowell School Committee Member Sean Sullivan, and his wife Janice, of Tewksbury; Michael Sullivan and his wife Eileen, of Nantucket Island. He was the proud grandfather of three granddaughters: Shelagh Marie Sullivan and Shannon Leigh Sullivan, of Tewksbury; and Meghan Rose Sullivan, of Nantucket. He was the brother of: June Wholey, Jerold Sullivan and Donna Timmins.

He was the father of the late Daniel Coakley Sullivan and the brother of the late Brenda L’Hussier.

Friends may call on Wednesday, July 10th, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 Nesmith Street, (Rte. 38). His Funeral Mass to be offered Thursday, July 11th, at 11 AM at ST. MARIE’S CHURCH. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the House of Hope; 812 Merrimack Street, Lowell, MA 01854, where his daughter serves as president of the Board.
