Obituary

John J. Hergenhan, 75, of Fairhaven died at home on February 4, 2020 after a valiant battle with heart disease. Son of the late John C. and Goldie Hergenhan of Armonk, NY, he graduated from Pleasantville High School, Oswego State University, and The New School for Social Research.

A man of strong convictions, he marched in the South for Civil Rights during the 1960s, and the song “Thirsty Boots” by Eric Andersen was written about John. He worked for the New York State Narcotic Commission and came to the New Bedford area in 1969 to establish its first Drug Treatment Center. He initiated and led the community effort “Countdown to Freedom”, and was involved in many preventative educational programs. He retired from the U.S. Justice Department after many years of service.

John was well known and respected for his vast knowledge, especially in ancient and military history, his humor, his flowers, and his generosity of time, talent and goods.

He is survived by his “bride” of 49 2/3 years, Laura (Escobar), his children, Beth, Cari and John C., six beloved grandchildren Mia, Marley, Paige, Ana, James and Jack; a sister, Joyce and extended family.

His family wishes to thank Dr. Marvin Konstam and the cardiac team at Tufts Medical Center, and Dr. Alan Weinshel of New Bedford for their extraordinary care which extended the quality and longevity of John’s life, and Sandy Dias, RN, of Community Nurse Home Care, for her kindness and support at the end.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date. Well wishers are urged to perform a random act of kindness for a veteran, a child, or a public servant, or plant a perennial in his memory. Arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd., Mattapoisett. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
