New Bedford – Maria Ascencão (Mendonca) Peixoto, age 92, of New Bedford, passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at St. Luke’s Hospital. She was the beloved wife of the late Antonio M. Peixoto, whom she was married to for 42 years and together had 8 children.
Maria was born in Nordeste, Sao Michael, Açores to the late Francisco and Francisca (Texeira) Mendonca. She came to the U.S. in 1976 where she worked as an inspector for Cliftex Corp. Maria enjoyed spending time with family and her kids and grandkids were the love of her life. She had also been a long-time parishioner of St. John’s the Baptist Church.
She is survived by her children, Angelo Melo and his wife Helena, Mariazinha Costa and her late husband Jose, Hildeberta Amaral and her late husband Emanuel, Manuel de Melo, Iria Costa and her husband Joao, Fernando Peixoto and his wife Fatima, Amelia Sousa and her husband Tony; grandchildren, Gina Rocha, Rui Melo, Lee-Ann DaCosta, Miguel Costa, Rui Amaral, Ana Medeiros, Antonio Melo, Patricia Raposa, Pedro Amaral, Fernando Amaral, Pedro Melo, Brian Costa, Christine Costa, Jessica Peixoto, Alicia Dupuis, Cristal Marsh, Victor Costa and Alexander Sousa; 23 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild and sister, Zulmira Vigaria of Toronto, Canada.
She was also the mother of the late Conceicao Melo, grandmother of the late Sally Costa and sister of the late Maria Mendonca, Manuel Teixeira, Odilia Mendonca and Genoveva Barbosa.
Maria’s visiting hours will be held on Thursday, January 30th from 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. at Perry Funeral Home. Her funeral will be Friday morning, beginning in the funeral home at 7:45 A.M. and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Immaculate Conception Church at 9:00 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in St. John’s Cemetery.
