Obituary

Lunberg, Karen Marie of San Mateo, California formerly of Roslindale passed away on January 6, 2020. Born in Norwood on October 28, 1947. She was the loving daughter of the late Algot and Catherine (Nee Campbell) Lundberg. She is also survived by her cousins Sandra Fitzpatrick of Foxboro, Linda Laridis and her husband George of Norwood, John Dyke and his wife Nancy of Norwood and the late Robert Dyke and his wife Phyllis and the late David Dyke. Karen is also survived by several other cousins and her dear friend Ruth Short of California.

She graduated from Monterey Peninsula College (AA in 1968) and from California State University, San Diego (BA in Communications in 1970) and from the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies (MA in Communications in 1977). She attended the University of Utah from 1989 to 1994 (all but dissertation) in Communications and where she lost her hearing due to the effects of loud noise in the headphones she wore for her audio/visual work. She could not continue her work on her dissertation.

In 1994, at the age of 47, she entered the Monastery of the Valley of the Lord in Prairie du Lac Wisconsin, a Cistercian Order. She professed her vows in 1996 as Sister Marie Magdalen. She dispensed her vows in 1999 to return to California to care for her mother who had since moved to California and whose care she needed.
She was a life-long educator and taught at Monterey Peninsula College, Salt Lake Community College, JobTrain and Sequoia Adult School in Menlo Park. She devoted her life to her students and their needs and welfare. She was a scuba diver in San Diego and Monterey and worked Search and Rescue in Salt Lake City. When she could be persuaded not to work, she became a fan of the Irving M. Klein String Competition and its young musicians (a few of whom she got to know) and of the San Francisco Opera and Symphony at a few performances.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited Mass of Christian Burial that will be celebrated on Friday, January 24, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. in St Theresa of Avila Chapel, 2078 Centre Street, West Roxbury.
