Dorothy S. (Silva) Gomes, 94, of New Bedford, MA died January 8, 2020 surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Jose P. Gomes, with whom she shared 52 years of marriage.
Born in New Bedford, MA, the daughter of the late Gregorio A. Silva and Maria Lima Barros, she proudly lived in New Bedford her entire life. Dorothy was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church. She was a woman of unwavering faith, who knew and loved her Savior.
She was formerly employed as a Reading Specialist at Carney Academy in New Bedford for over 20 years. The love communicated by her students speaks volumes about her dedication.
She loved listening to and singing Cape Verdean music. She also enjoyed opening up her home to entertain her family and friends. One of her favorite pastimes was solving crossword puzzles.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Cynthia Gomes and Elayne Gomes-Battle and her husband David, all of Sterling, VA; a sister, Rose Almeida and niece, Marie Robinson of New Bedford; 2 granddaughters, Alyssa and Adrianna Battle; numerous nieces, nephews, Godchildren, and in-laws.
She was predeceased by her sister Sylvia Silva, and her nieces Marcia Cruz and Dolores Silva.
Her Funeral will be held on Tuesday, January 14th at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Monday, January 13th from 4-8 PM.
