Obituary

Mary Frances Garrison Watts of Evans, Georgia passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 2, 2020 at age 90. She was born in Anderson, South Carolina on June 12, 1929 to parents Louis Clyde Garrison and Martha Frances Baldwin Garrison.

Mary earned her degree in music from Winthrop College in 1950. In July of that year she married Wallace Stone Watts in Sumter, South Carolina, and they were faithful and loving partners until his death in 1996.

Music was always an important part of Mary’s life. After studying music at Winthrop she taught music in the public schools for several years. Her faith was also a priority for her and she devoted her musical talents to serving God through music her entire life. For many years she taught pre-school Sunday School and led children’s choirs. She was a frequent soloist and faithful choir member in each church she attended, including Hillcrest Baptist Church in Augusta and the First Baptist Church of Evans where she was a member from 1970 until her death. She also shared her music outside the church, joining the Columbia County Choral Society when it was founded in 1997. Music expressed her faith and brought her joy and she was always anxious to share both through her music.

Mary was devoted to her family. She was a loving and encouraging mother to her three children, always putting their needs ahead of her own. When grandchildren came along, she was an active participant in all the important events of their lives. She was an eager sitter for her local grandchildren and a happy host when her out-of-town grandchildren came for extended summer visits. She couldn’t hide the joy that her family brought to her life.

Mary will also be remembered by many as a good friend. She took her friendships seriously and was loyal and encouraging. She will be missed.

Mary is survived by her sons Ronald Watts (Juliane) and Steven Watts; her daughter, Barbara Bryan (Greg); a sister, Judy Mims; her grandchildren, Marty Watts (Karyn), Christy Silvestre (Oscar), Robbie Watts (Rebekah), Rick Watts (Paige), William Bryan, Matthew Bryan, and Mary Beth Bryan; her great grandchildren, Duncan Watts, Ana Silvestre, Emily Silvestre, and Oscar Samuel Silvestre; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A service celebrating her life will be held on Friday, January 10, 2020, at 11 AM at the First Baptist Church of Evans, 515 North Belair Road, Evans, Georgia. Rev. Philip Hedgecoth will officiate and burial will follow at Westover Memorial Park in Augusta, Georgia.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 9, 2020 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Platt’s Funeral Home, 337 North Belair Road, Evans, Georgia. The family will also receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
