FAIRHAVEN - Barbara B. (Besse) Laffery, 89, of Fairhaven, died Thursday, January 26, 2006, at Alden Court Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the widow of Andrew A. Lafferty, Jr.
Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Millage and Eva M. (Moody) Besse. She lived in this area all her life.
For 55 years, she was very active with the Girl Scouts of America. As a leader of this organization, she was the first to intergrate her troop many years ago. She was also active with the Grange for more than 50 years and a member of the Nation Massachusetts Grange and a past master of Sippican Pomona 31 and the Acushnet Grange 285 and had been an associate of the Fairhaven Grange.
For many years, she was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church and the Episcopal Churchwomen.
Survivors include three daughters, Joan Bollinger of Punta Gorda, Fla., Martha Turner of Warrenton, Va., and Susan Meinholt of New Bedford, Ma. three sons, Andrew A. Laffery III of Fairhaven and Stephen Lafferty and Robert Lafferty both of New Bedford; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was sister of the late Raymond and Willard Besse.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, January 30, 2006, in the Wilson Chapel 479 County St.. New Bedford. Buria will be in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours are Sunday from 3-7 p.m.
