SPRINGFIELD – Dolores M. “Laurie” (Beaufield) Alton, 92, of the McKnight section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Saturday, November 30, 2019. She passed into Eternal Life at her home surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving daughter, Deirdre. She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 25, 1927, a beloved daughter of the late Alvin and Irene Famularo. She was raised at the Academy of the Holy Angels Convent and graduated from Governor Nicholls High School. She later lived in New York City, New York where she met her first husband, the late Sanford Redmond. With her second husband, the late William “Bill” Alton, she moved to Bennington, Vermont, and Chicago, Illinois, where she performed at the Second City, and then returned to New York City. She furthered her education and attended Bennington College in Bennington and Hunter College in New York City. As Bill’s career as a television director began to ascend, she was able to accompany him to commercial shoots all over the world, meet movie and stage stars and live the life of a real "jet setter." After her divorce, Dolores returned to New Orleans in 1980 and eventually teamed up with the late Professor William Mouton of Tulane University. Their company, Beaufield Homes was on the forefront of many innovations, from modular home building to shoreline retention with their invention "Beach Cones." Dolores continued to teach painting from her studio in Covington, Louisiana until moving to Springfield, Massachusetts in 2008. Dolores was a well-known painter and artist with works in the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Historic New Orleans Collection as well as many private collectors. She also modeled and acted and was the first Prell Shampoo Girl and was an ingénue for 20th Century Fox Studios. Above all, she was a wonderful mother and showered her family with her love and affection. She leaves her three loving children, Stephen B. Redmond and his wife, Cheryl, of Guilford Center, VT, Jonathan S. Redmond, and her caregiver, Deirdre E. Alton of Springfield with whom she lived; her five cherished grandchildren, Genevieve Redmond, Xoli Redmond, Tara Alton, William Colin Cherry and Maeve Cherry; her dear brother, Don Famularo and his wife, Vicki, her dear sister, Diane Goldman and her husband, Michael; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended family members. She also leaves her caregiver, Stephanie Bristol, who became as dear to her as a daughter. At Dolores’ request, her funeral services and burial are private. There are no visiting hours. Her funeral arrangements are entrusted to the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107.
