Obituary

SOUTH HADLEY - Theodore A. “Ted” Hamel, Jr., 71, of South Hadley, was Called Safely Home on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, 2019. He passed into Eternal Life at home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Holyoke on November 8, 1948, the beloved son of the late Theodore A. Hamel, Sr. and Helen M. (Pysz) Hamel. He was raised in Holyoke, graduated from Holyoke Catholic High School and lived in Holyoke for many years before moving to South Hadley in 2003. He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and attained the rank of Sergeant. He received the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Overseas Service Bar. He was employed as a groundskeeper for 23 years at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley. He was an active member of the DAV Westover Chapter 11 in Chicopee and the American Legion Post 260 in South Hadley. He always tried to help his fellow veterans and often spent time at the Vet Center Counseling Center in West Springfield. A talented vocalist, he sang with many local bands including the Crescents, Limelight and Route 66. During his leisure time, he enjoyed golfing, camping in Vermont and cheering on his New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and his many friends. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Barbara M. Barron. They were married on June 2, 1988 in Northampton and were blessed with over 31 years of happiness together. He also leaves his three loving daughters, Annalise N. Hamel-Acosta and her husband, Frank Acosta, Melissa L. Thomas and her husband, John, and Michelle A. Sergneri and her husband, Paul, all of Chicopee; his seven cherished grandchildren, Isabella and Trent Acosta, Michael and Brandon Thomas, Sarah Ames and Michael and Matthew Sergneri; his two dear sisters, Joan H. Welch of Chicopee and Doris A. Sparko and her husband, David, of South Hadley; his two dear sisters-in-law, Christine Lagimonier and her husband, Bob, and Sandra Barron; his dear brother-in-law, Lester White; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Hamel and Barron families. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his dear sister, Barbara M. Javorski; his two dear brothers-in-law, Thomas E. Javorski and James J. “Jimmie” Welch; and his in-laws of the Barron family including his dear brother-in-law, Raymond Barron and his wife, Sheila Baker; and his two dear sisters-in-law, Beverly White and Anna Beauchemin. His relatives and friends are invited to attend a Committal Service with United States Army Military Honors on Friday, December 6, 2019 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001, (please meet directly at the cemetery chapel).
