Victoria M. Brake, 96, formerly of Concord St., Belmont died Wednesday, July 3, 2002 in the Wm. Clough Extended Care Facility of the New London Hospital. She was born in Granby Quebec on June 19, 1906, the daughter of Alfred and Arthemise (Beaudoin) Gilbert and had lived in the Belmont-Laconia area all of her life.
She had been employed at the St. Francis Home in Laconia for many years until her retirement in 1994 at the age of 88 years. Prior to that she had worked for the Cormier Hosiery Mills. Victoria was an avid gardener.
Mrs. Brake was a communicant of St. Joseph Parish of Belmont and was a member of the Altar & Rosary Society of the parish. She also held membership in the Belmont Women’s Club, the Laconia Rod & Gun Club and the Snowshoe Club.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, Emile J. Brake in 1971 and her sons, Henry Brake in 1984 and Ernest Brake in 1995 as well as ten brothers and sisters.
Survivors include a brother, Eugene Gilbert of Gilford; a sister, Beatrice Bedell of Laconia; nine grandchildren, Carol Drouin, Doris Fougere and Donna Leighton, all of Laconia, Debra Gile, Sandra Champagne and Raymond Brake, all of Belmont; Wayne Brake of Londonderry, Ernest Brake of North Sutton and Virginia Brake of North Carolina. She leaves many great grandchildren, three great- great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours were in the Simoneau & Lambert Funeral Home, 139 Church St. Laconia on Sunday from 6 to 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Joseph Parish, corner of Church and Main Sts., Belmont on Monday at 10 AM. Burial was in St. John Cemetery, Tilton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Charles Children’s Home, 16 Grant St., Rochester NH 03868. Timothy C. Molan and David L. Furber were the funeral directors.
