Obituary

Carol E. (Henry) Cherry, 76 of New Bern, North Carolina died Monday, October 7, 2019 at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Richard M. Cherry, in 2006.

Born in Manhattan, New York on January 13, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Ronald P. and Florence R. (Williams) Henry.

Carol was a resident of New Bern since 2004 and formerly resided in Leominster and Bolton. She grew up in Waverly, Ohio and graduated from Waverly High School and earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Fitchburg State College in 1995.

Before her retirement, she worked as a case manager for the elderly at Montachusett Home Care in Leominster.

Carol was an active member of the West New Bern Presbyterian Church, where she was an ordained ruling elder, and helped to lead major organizational changes at the church. She was also fundamental in starting and sustaining the children’s and youth ministry as well as overseeing the church preschool. In addition, she was an active member of the Craven County Genealogical Society, serving on the board and planning the annual Christmas party. She also served as a volunteer for FindAGrave.com, locating headstones local to her for other genealogists.

Carol was an avid quilter; making gifts for her friends and family and sewing with a local quilt group. There are many children around the United States who are blessed to have a quilt that she made. She enjoyed swimming regularly with her friend Ron, and having Sunday Supper with her favorite friends and neighbors in Belle Oaks.

She is survived by her son Joshua Paige of New Bern, her daughter Roberta Cross and her husband Jacob of Windham, New Hampshire. She is also survived by two step-sons, Chuck Cherry and his wife Joan of Lawrence, Massachusetts and John Cherry and his wife Maicie of Milford, New Hampshire.

She is also survived by two brothers, Robert Henry and his wife Susan of Lake Waynoka, Ohio and David Henry and his wife Midge of Covington, Louisiana, as well as three granddaughters whom she cherished, Caroline and Charlotte Cross, and Clarissa Cherry. Carol also leaves behind her two precious poodles, Bert and Ernie.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a calling hour on Friday, October 11 from 1 - 2 p.m. in the Ginley Crowley Funeral Home, 3 Barber St. in Medway (www.ginleyfuneralhomes.com) followed by her funeral service at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Medway.

Additional services will be held in New Bern, North Carolina at a date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Carol’s memory to the Colonial Capital Humane Society, 1860 Old Airport Rd., New Bern, NC 28562.
