Obituary

NEW BEDFORD -- Gilbert E. Fortin, 82, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 24, 2019 after a two-year battle with cancer. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 54 years, Irene M. (Pinto) Fortin.

Born August 5, 1937, the son of the late Ovila and Blanche (Handfield) Fortin, he was a lifelong resident of New Bedford. Gilbert joined the US Air Force upon graduation from New Bedford High School, retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant after serving 31 years. Upon his return to Massachusetts, Gil was employed at Sturtevant & Hook until its closing and later retiring from Beacon Lumber.

Always ready to deliver a joke; Gil will be remembered for his tremendous wit. In his spare time, Gil loved to play golf with friends and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and Boston Bruins. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family with whom he shared many happy times together.

He is survived by his four children, Edward Gagnon and his wife Jane of TX, Melanie Pattinson of RI, Robert Gagnon of MA, and James Gagnon and his wife Margaret of MA. Gilbert is also survived by his five grandsons, Thomas and Neil Pattinson, and James, Matthew, and Jonathan Gagnon, as well as two great-grandchildren. Gilbert is also survived by his sister-in-law, Elaine Fortin and several nieces and nephews.

Gilbert is predeceased by his brothers Conrad and Herve Fortin.

Calling hours are Sunday, September 29, 2019 from 3-6pm at Wilson Funeral Home, 479 County St, New Bedford. A mass in celebration of his life will begin at 11am on Monday, September 30, 2019 at St. Joseph & St. Therese Parish, New Bedford. Burial with military honors will follow in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
