Gary M. Gomes, 67 of New Bedford died August 15, 2019 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.
He was the beloved husband of Michelle (Dupont) Gomes.
Born in New Bedford, son of Albino and Joan M. (Ward) Gomes, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Gomes was a firefighter for 30 years with the New Bedford Fire Department retiring as captain.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Vietnam War.
He enjoyed golfing.
Survivors inclued his wife; his parents; 2 sons, Mathew Gomes and Aaron Gomes, both of New Bedford; a sister, Susan Simon and her husband Eric of Fairhaven; his brother-in-law, Paul Dupont and his wife Mariann of Lynn; a granddaughter, Juliana Gomes; 2 grandsons, Garret Gomes and Eli Gomes; 2 nieces, Danielle and Hailey; a nephew, Jeffrey; and several cousins.
His visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, August 20th from 4-8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 AM at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 121 Mt. Pleasant St., New Bedford. The family requests that the public meet directly at church. Burial to follow in Rural Cemetery.
