Obituary

Gary W. Maddocks, Sr., 74, of Farnum Pike, Smithfield, died Friday, July 26, 2019 at Fatima Hospital in North Providence. He was the husband of the late Faith A. (Hansen) Maddocks. They had been married for 39 years at the time of her death in 2015.

Born in Cambridge, Massachussetts, he was a son of the late Helene Marion Goodwin and Charles "Buddy" Albert. He had lived in Smithfield since 1976 He had served in the US Army during Vietnam and retired as a LT Colonel after 38 years of service. He was assigned to military operations in Iraq "Operation Enduring Freedom", Panama, South Korea and Japan. He also had served in the US Navy 1962 to 1964 and was part of the Cuban Missile Blockade. Among many received the Bronze Star, Meritorious Conduct, Global War, Army Achievement, Army Commendation Oak Leaf, National Defense, Army Service Ribbon, National Guard Service XX Defense, Emergency Service Ribbon, Navy Good Conduct, Navy Commendation, Expeditionary Cuban Blockade. He held numerous Army Commander positions such as Provost Marshal, Brigade Commander, Battlefield Circulation Control, Chief Human Relations Officer Iraqi Freedom, Electronics Warfare Officer, He had also worked as a detective for the Johnston Police Department and served from 1966 - 1985. He also worked as an investigator for DCYF.

He was a member of the VFW Post 2929 in Smithfield and served as State Commander 2013-2014, and State Judge Advocate 2014-2016.

He is survived by his children: Yvonne Ricci and her husband, Matthew of Cranston, his sons: Lieutenant Troy Maddocks, JPD of Smithfield and retired Deputy Chief of Police Gary W. Maddocks, Jr. , JPD, of North Scituate, his grandchildren and his sister Gayle Healey of Long Island, NY.

A visitation to which relatives and friends are invited will be held Tuesday 4-7pm in the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Rt 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Committal will be held on Wednesday at 12:00 pm in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the Smithfield VFW 2929 or the VA Medical Center, 830 Chalkstone Ave, Voluntary Service (135), Providence, RI 02908
