Obituary

CALLIS, Stephen R., best known to his friends as "Steve", of Winthrop, passed away on July 3, 2019. He was 70 years old. Born and raised in the Village of Waquoit in Falmouth on Cape Cod, he was the cherished son of the late Emile G. and Katherine A. (Servis) Callis. Stephen is survived by Gayle (Pingiaro) Callis, his wife of 48 years, his children Marc Callis and his wife Khanh of Winthrop, Joni Bonilla and her husband Matthew Gleason of Niskayuna, NY, and Matthew Callis and his wife Laura of Stoughton; and by his grandchildren Hadrian, Taitum, Braeson, and Kennedy. Stephen is also survived by his sister, Fern Daniels and her husband Kevin Daniels of South Carolina and he was the brother of the late Kenneth Callis and his wife Karin of East Falmouth, and by many devoted friends in the local golf, tennis, and fishing communities, and at the Winthrop Lodge of Elks #1078.

Steve attended New Hampshire College (now SNHU), where he was active in the Phi Delta Psi fraternity. Stephen was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving in 1971, with the drill team that took him around the United States and Bermuda during the Vietnam War. After service in the naval reserve, Steve started and operated several successful businesses, most notably the Shirley Shoppe in Revere, before retiring from government service as a member of the first class at the TSA. He was a regular fixture at area golf courses, tennis courts, and fishing spots. In retirement, he was an avid gardener.

His funeral will be held in the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home 210 Winthrop St. Winthrop on Thursday, July 11, at 11am. Relatives and friends are invited. Interment will follow in Winthrop Cemetery (Belle Isle Section). Visiting hours will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday, July 10, from 5-7pm.
