Obituary


Miriam Margolies Stubbs, 99, of Provincetown passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 14th at her apartment at Seashore Point. She was the widow of Kenneth Stubbs, who died in 1967.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Hannah [Wolf] Margolies. She graduated from Barnard College and received her Masters Degree in Political Science from Columbia University.

She moved to Washington DC in the early 1940’s to begin her forty-year career in the federal government specializing in rehabilitation policy and legislation. In the course of her career she was instrumental in developing landmark legislation and was twice honored to attend the ceremony at the White House when President Johnson signed the legislation into law.

She and her late husband, a noted artist, would summer in Provincetown with her children beginning in the late 1950s. After his death, she continued to spend summers in Provincetown, moving here full time 4 years ago.

After retiring in 1980, she traveled to China, Russia, Turkey, Eastern Europe and other countries. She also pursued her lifelong interest in weaving.

Miriam is survived by her son, Keith Stubbs and daughter in law, Molly Hockman
of Great Falls, VA, her daughter, Pamela DeColo and son in law Theodore DeColo of Newton, MA as well as granddaughters Kendra DeColo and Sophia Snell and two great-granddaughters, Elia Miriam and Scarlett Susanna. She also leaves many Provincetown friends.

She was laid to rest in Provincetown Cemetery next to her beloved husband on May 16, 2019. Her son-in-law Ted played selections from her favorite Puccini operas.

A Celebration of her Life will be held at a date and time to be announced.
