Obituary

SPRINGFIELD ~ Diana M. (Laureano) Smedberg, 62, of Springfield, was called home on Monday, May 13, 2019. She passed away at Brigham and Women’s Hospital surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family.

Diana was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, graduating from Erasmus Hall High School in 1975. Diana then moved to the Western Massachusetts area shortly after high school and settled into the city of Springfield in 1988 where she lived for the remainder of her life. In 1981, Diana graduated from the Baystate Medical Center School of Nursing and later received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1998. Diana was proud of her nursing education and in her almost four decade career as a Registered Nurse she helped heal and care for hundreds of patients in her community.

Diana was predeceased by her beloved infant daughter, Rose Marie Abreu who was called home on August 6, 1983; her mother Josefina (Medina) Melendez and stepfather, Juan Melendez. She leaves her devoted husband and best friend of over 25 years, Stephen P. Smedberg, her two loving sons, Alexander F. Abreu and his wife, Elaine, of Hollywood, FL and Aaron M. Abreu and his fiancee, Estephany Mena-Deleon, of Springfield, along with her stepchildren Adam Smedberg of Chicopee, Sara Smedberg and her husband, Michael Biasetti, of Longmeadow, Nathan Smedberg and Stephen Smedberg, both of Wilbraham. Diana also leaves eight cherished grandchildren, Aquanalee Gutierrez, Gabrielle Abreu, Jayden Abreu, Myles Alexander Abreu, Rosalie Marie Abreu, Lucas Biasetti, Oliver Biasetti and Bellamy Biasetti.

At Diana’s request, her Funeral Services and Burial will be private and at the convenience of her family. There will be no visiting hours, a Celebration of Life Gathering in her memory will be announced by her family shortly. In lieu of flowers, Diana’s family requests that memorial donations be made in her memory to Baystate’s Children’s Hospital.
