John E. “Doc” Doherty of South Boston.
May 13, 2019 he was 82 years young. Doc died after a brief illness at the VA Hospital in West Roxbury. He was surrounded by his family and friends. Doc was the Beloved husband to the late Janet (Richardson) Doherty who died in 2012. Devoted father of John E Doherty Jr., his wife Bethany of Braintree, the late Paul J. Doherty and Francine A. Walsh of South Boston. Loving grandfather to Kaylee, Brian, Michael, Drew, Jack and Ava. Doc was born in born, raised and lived his entire life in South Boston. He was the son to Frank and Rita Doherty and was the brother to Richard Doherty of South Boston and Rita Doherty of North Carolina and the late Frank, Kenny and Kevin Doherty. Doc is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Doc joined the Navy at 18 where he served on the USS Terrebonne in Korea and Norfolk Virginia. After the Navy he went to work at Melo-Tone as a machine mechanic.
Janet and Doc married in 1960. After Doc retired in 2006 from Melo-Tone and started his next career at The South Boston Yacht Club. He also worked at The BayState Cruise Company aboard The Provincetown II. His final career was at The Boston Collegiate Charter School, Sydney Street campus.
Doc was known to his family and friends for his quiet demeanor and willingness to help anyone. He was always at the stove, tending the grill or at the market. He enjoyed family trips, bowling, socializing at The Post and watching his grandchildren’s activities.
Visiting hours at Casper Funeral Home Friday from 4-8. Funeral Mass at The Gate of Heaven Church, 615 East Fourth Street, Saturday May 18 at 9:00AM. Relatives and friends invited. Interment will take place at The Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at a later date. In lieu of flowers donation can be made to “Super Saturday’s Recreation Program” 128 Town Street Braintree, MA 02184 in Doc’s name.
