Obituary

AGAWAM ~ Mary Ellen “Mima” (Hayward) Halpy, 66, of the Quail Run Estates in Agawam, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, May 1, 2019. She passed into Eternal Life at her sister Donna’s home in Palmer surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was born in Springfield on April 2, 1953, a beloved daughter of the late Donald T. Hayward, Jr. who was Called Home on March 20, 2000 and the late Rosemary A. (Burns) Hayward who was Called Home on January 13, 2008. She was raised in Springfield, graduated from Springfield Technical High School in 1971 and had lived in the Feeding Hills section of Agawam before moving to Southwick where she lived for many years. She later moved to Springfield for a short while before returning to Agawam in 2018. She furthered her education and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Language Arts from Westfield State Teachers College in Westfield and a Master of Arts Degree in Language Arts from Cambridge College in Springfield. Mary Ellen was employed for 24 years in the Town of Southwick and had worked as an English Language Arts Teacher at the Powder Mill Middle School in Southwick. She later worked in the City of Holyoke at Holyoke High School. Active in her Catholic faith, she was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield. During her younger years, Mary Ellen enjoyed skiing whether on snow or water. She also enjoyed playing racquetball, handball and softball. She was active with her daughter Abbey’s soccer team as a soccer coach. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and her many dear colleagues and friends. She leaves her beloved daughter, Abbey A. Halpy of Feeding Hills; her two cherished grandchildren who will miss their “Mima” deeply, Rocco and Isabella Arzola; her two dear sisters, Donna M. DiMascola of Palmer and Cheryl A. Chicoine and her husband, Jacko, of Springfield; her dear brother, Donald M. “Mick” Hayward and his wife, Sheila, of South Hadley; and her many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, friends and extended members of the Hayward family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved infant daughter, Amy R. Halpy who was Called Home on September 3, 1984; and her dear brother-in-law, Peter J. DiMascola who was Called Home on June 29, 2015. At Mary Ellen’s request, her funeral services and burial will be private at the convenience of her family. There are no visiting hours. Her funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107.
