Ulana Nadraga Sos
Ulana, the daughter of Vasyl and Stephania Nadraga, was born in 1939 in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine. She immigrated with her parents to the United States in 1949 and spent her childhood and early adult years in Philadelphia.
In November, 1958 she married John Sos and they embarked on a 60-year loving partnership living in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Florida, and Providence, RI. Together they raised three children, Renata, Yarko, Lusia and eight grandchildren.
Ulana was a very active member of a plethora of Ukrainian organizations including Plast Ukrainian Scouting, the Ukrainian Women’s Association, teaching in Ukrainian Saturday school, and the Ukrainian Church.
After staying at home while her children were young, Ulana undertook a career as an interpreter and language instructor. She worked in both Russian and Ukrainian languages interpreting tor the U.S. government officials including the US Ambassador to Moscow and the Secretary of Defense. Additionally, she served as an instructor teaching Russian and Ukrainian to U.S. and NATO military officers in the U.S., Germany, England and Spain.
Ulana loved literature, music, opera, ballet and vocal choirs. She sang in the Ukrainian women’s sextet Namysto and in various choirs.
Ulana is mourned by her husband John, daughter Renata and her spouse Judy along with their daughters Kate and Jenna, son Yarko with his spouse Lydia and their children Natalie, Andrew, Stephanie, and daughter Lusia with her spouse Roman and their children Artym, Maya and Taissa; nieces Tanya Vitvitsky and Ivanka Olesnycky and their spouses and children; and relatives both in the Unites States and Ukraine.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, April 29, 2019 from 5-7PM in Christ the King Ukrainian Catholic Church 146 Forest Hills St. Jamaica Plain 02130 as well as a Requiem Divine Liturgy on Tuesday April 30 at 10 am. A private interment will take place on Wednesday May 1 at 1PM in St. Joseph Cemetery, Boston.
