Obituary


SPRINGFIELD ~ Dena (Legos) Clay, 82, of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Friday, April 12, 2019. She passed into Eternal Life at her home surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Springfield on July 2, 1936, a beloved daughter of the late Fotios Layos and Helen (Vekrakos) Layos. She was raised in Springfield, graduated from the High School of Commerce and was a lifelong resident of Springfield. Dena furthered her education and received a certificate from LaBarron Hairdressing Academy in Springfield. She was the owner and operator for many years of Dena’s Hair Design in Springfield. She was a member of the Parent Teacher’s Association at the Liberty School in Springfield and during her leisure time, she enjoyed meeting with her friends from Hungry Hill for coffee at McDonald’s on the Armory Street Rotary in Springfield. Most of all, she was a wonderful homemaker to her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. She was a communicant of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield. She leaves her beloved husband and soul mate, Henry G. Clay, Jr. They were married on July 1, 1956 at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield and were blessed with over 62 years of happiness together. She also leaves her four loving children, Henry G. Clay III and his wife, Maryellen, of Longmeadow, Helene E. Kelly and her husband, William, of Plymouth, MA, Jeffrey W. Clay and his wife, Barbara, of East Longmeadow, and Alicia C. Arnold and her husband, Christopher, of Natick, MA; her four cherished grandchildren whom she adored, Sophia and Ryan Clay and Jordan and Ian Arnold; her dear sister, Demetra Bozoglos of Springfield; her dear sister-in-law, Janet Gibson of Plymouth, MA; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Clay, Legos and Layos families. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her dear sister, Elizabeth Legos; and her three dear brothers, William F. Legos, George F. Legos, and Peter Legos. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, April 23, 2019 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 7:45 a.m.), followed by a Funeral Service at 9 a.m. at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2320 Main Street, Springfield, MA 01107. Her Committal and Burial will follow the Funeral Service at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, April 22, 2019 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Her family has requested that memorial donations be made in her memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children, Springfield Unit, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
