Obituary

CORNISH- George R. Stone, 88, of South Cornish, passed away of natural causes at his home on Thursday.

He was born in Kensington, Connecticut on November 17, 1930 son of Charles H. and Izola Parsons Stone.

George came to Cornish 85 years ago. He graduated from Cornish High School in 1950. He worked at Congoleum Corporation in East Baldwin until going into the US Army in 1952 where he worked with Field Communications in Korea. Shortly after returning home in 1953 he married Ruth E. Day. They settled initially in Steep Falls, moving to South Cornish in 1957 and were married for 65 years.

He worked for 28 years for Holmes Transportation where he worked as a tractor trailer delivery driver in the Lewiston/Auburn area.

George was especially fond of all the animal members of his family - most recent members, Smudge, Ebony and Zero. He enjoyed listening to country music, working in his garden and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife Ruth and children Rhonda, Gary and Lisa; sisters Barbara and Elizabeth (Betty) and brother Donald; five grandchildren, three great grandchildren and multiple nieces, nephews and their families.

He is pre-deceased by his father Charles, his mother Izola, his brother Charles, Jr. and sister Eleanor.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday April 2, from 5-7 PM, followed by a 7 PM funeral service with US Army Honors at the Poitras, Neal & York Funeral Home, 71 Maple St., Cornish. Burial will be in the spring. Online condolence messages can be submitted at www.mainefuneral.com
