Obituary

Steven Ray Weingarten of Boca Raton, FL and Provincetown, MA was born on June 10, 1957 in Houston, TX. He passed from this life on March 10, 2019 in Boca Raton, FL following an acute illness as a complication from a stem cell transplant in 2018.

Preceded in death by his father, Harris Weingarten and father-in-law Willis Hester, he is survived by his husband, Grant Hester and his quadruplets Adam Weingarten of Houston, TX, Daniel Weingarten (with wife Whitney) of Atlanta, GA, Mark Weingarten (with wife Elaine) of Chicago, IL, and Lauren Marouni (with husband Oren). He is also survived by his mother Emily Stein and mother-in-law Norma Hester, his sisters Shelley Wisner (Vic) and Sharon Segal (Michael), brother-in-law Barry Hester (Audrey) and six nieces and nephews. Additionally, he is survived by his aunt Bette Cohn of Sarasota, FL and the Steiners (Greg, Karen, Kirby and Maggie) of The Woodlands, TX with whom many holidays were shared.

Having grown up in Houston, Steve graduated high school from the Kinkaid School and then graduated from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown, University. Returning to Houston, he first worked for IME Properties and then began a 35-year career at Weingarten Realty where he earned the position of Senior Vice President of Leasing for the Southeast Region.

Steve’s devotion to his career was near legendary. In addition to his duties at WRI, he was very active in numerous industry organizations. He is a past State Director (Texas) of the International Council of Shopping Centers, and a former chairman of the Texas Idea Exchange. He also served as the Dean of School of Open Air Centers for the ICSC University of Shopping Centers and currently served as a member of the Open Air Center committee. He valued the relationships he formed with brokers and tenants and always stressed that real estate was merely relationships.

However, Steve was also equally devoted to his volunteer work. He was on the Board and Executive Committee of the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston for a number of years. He was also incredibly active in his home synagogue, Congregation Emanu El in Houston where he is a past president. He is also a past president of Southwest Houston 2000, a community organization focused on economic development for the area.

His greatest joys came from time spent with his children and friends. He could always be counted on to show up for a friend in need. An avid traveler with a lifelong wanderlust, Steve often spoke fondly of his summer with the Kempers (Tito, Graciela, and their children) in Paraguay before his senior year of high school. He remained very close with the Kempers and considered them his second family. His love of travel continued and he and Grant took as many trips together as they could to locales as varied as Fargo, ND and The Galapagos. However, their favorite times were their numerous trips to New York where they would cram as many plays and cabarets into a weekend as possible and their glorious times spent in Provincetown, Massachusetts where they purchased a small house and anxiously anticipated more time there in his retirement. Steve and Grant would often say to each other, “We have a house in Boca and a home in Provincetown.”

While his body gave out and he is no longer with us, he accomplished a great deal in his too-short time here on earth. His memory will be a blessing to all who knew him.

Per his wishes, a private burial of his ashes will be conducted in Provincetown with Grant and his children.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Soup Kitchen in Provincetown (ptownsoup.org), the Provincetown Theater (provincetowntheater.org), or your favorite charity.
