McCARTHY, ELLEN LEE – of West Roxbury, formerly of Mission Hill, March 6, 2019, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Daughter of the late Anne and Charles McCarthy. Loving sister of Catherine and Robert Dawson of Medford, the late Mary Duffy and her husband George Duffy of Weymouth, John and Marie McCarthy of Stoneham, James and Judy McCarthy of Hyannis, Charles McCarthy and his wife Theresa Fitzgerald of Roslindale, and Gerard and Theresa McCarthy of Plymouth. Survived by her godson Kevin Duffy, and his fiancée Stephanie Cameron of Easton, and her niece Elizabeth Roosevelt and her husband Brian of Marshfield, her nephews James Dawson and wife Tiffany of Billerica, John McCarthy of Stoneham, Stephen McCarthy of North Carolina and Brad Dawson of Medford. Survived by her partner and best friend Diane Joyce who lovingly and tirelessly functioned as the primary caretaker for Ellen throughout her illness.
A dedicated lifelong educator in the Boston Public Elementary school system, former long-term director of the Early Learning Center at the Jackson Mann School in Brighton and finally as principal of the Alexander Hamilton Elementary School in Brighton.
Special thanks to all the professionals, nurses, aides, etc. whose efforts allowed her family to care and provide for Ellen in her home. Thank you to the Joyce family, Phillip, Judi and Jennifer for your love and support.
Funeral from the Robert J Lawler & Crosby Funeral Home, 1803 Centre Street, West Roxbury, on Monday, March 11, 2019 at 9:00am. Followed by a Funeral Mass at St. John Chrysostom Church, 4750 Washington Street, West Roxbury, at 10:00 am.
Visiting hours Sunday March 10, from 2:00 – 6:00 pm. Relatives and friends invited.
Interment Mount Benedict cemetery.
