Obituary

Raymond John Thurber, 74, of Mountaindale Road, Smithfield, died Monday, March 4th, in his home.

Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Joseph and Rose (Zoglio) Thurber. He had lived in Smithfield for most of his life.

A U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam era, he proudly served his country from 1962 through 1965. He had been a member of the Smithfield Elks, BPOE 2359 for 40 years. He was also an active member of the DAV- Disabled American Veterans. He had been a truck driver with St. Germain Trucking before retiring.

He leaves his children, Jason Thurber and Darlene Vanasse, both of Smithfield, as well as his four grandchildren: Shayna, Dylan, Damon and Dustin Vanasse, and one great-granddaughter, Madilynn Vanasse. He was the brother of Robert Thurber of East Greenwich, and Joseph Thurber of North Kingstown, step-brother to Michael Thurber of Glocester, Ellen Dembowski of Ventura, California, Ruth Maugetega of Garden Grove, California, Joan Thurber of Huntington Beach, California and Andrew Thurber of Penacook, New Hampshire.

His funeral will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Disabled American Veterans.
