Obituary


STANDISH – Walter “Walt” Doe Brooks age 80 passed peacefully at home on February 16th surrounded by loved ones including his wife Faith (Fay), children and grandchildren. He had been battling mesothelioma, and Alzheimer’s for many years.

Walt was born in Portland, Maine on March 6th 1938. He was one of two sons and 4 daughters belonging to the late Guy Lester Brooks and Frances (Doe) Brooks. He attended schools in Portland, Falmouth and graduated from Greely Institute in 1956. It was while at the Greely Institute he met his future wife Faith Mason. After graduation Walt enlisted in the USAF. After his time in the USAF he enlisted in the US Navy Reserves. He proudly served his country for a total of 26 years.

Walt and Fay settled in Cumberland where they raised 3 children. Rochelle, Jeffrey (Jeff) and Walter L. (Wally). Walter was proud of his Range road home and enjoyed working around the yard. He loved seeing Wally driving around the yard on ATV’s.

He had several careers in his lifetime and was a dedicated worker. Congdon Transportation delivering mail, Sun Oil delivering oil and later started his own business, Automatic Door of New England. His door business was a family business and over the years employed several family members.

He and Fay sold their home in Cumberland in 2003 and retired to Citrus Springs, Florida where he pursued his passion for golf. You could find him on the golf course several days a week. He also made small wood toys to be delivered to children through Lighthouse Baptist Church and helped deliver food to the food pantries in and around Citrus Springs, Florida. Fay and Walt moved back to Maine in 2018 to be near family.

He is predeceased by his parents, sisters Joanne Spaulding, and Sally Dow and brother William (Billy) Brooks and grandson Robert Batchelor.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years-Fay (Mason) Brooks; his children – Rochelle (Brooks) Googins and her husband Greg of Standish, Jeffrey Brooks and Patricia Gibboney of Robertsdale, Alabama and Walter L. (Wally) Brooks of Portland. Fay and Walter remained close to Michelle Brooks.

Grandchildren Tracey and her husband Brian Martin of Livermore, Christopher Brooks and Josie Davis of Raymond, Aron Brooks and Jessica Kandell of Falmouth, Theresa Brooks and Jason Warren of Gray, Chad Googins and Nikki Gagnon of Cumberland, Travis Googins and Nicole Mote of Bradenton, Florida, Brianna-Leigh and her husband Michael Ward of Standish. Great Grandchildren Bryanna, Theo, Jayden, Ava, Maddox, Caleb, Adi, Rylan, Jamen, Zoey and Jones. He was looking forward to the upcoming birth of great grandchild #12. Great -Great Grandchild Bentley.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday February 23rd at 1:00 pm at the Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service Chapel, 498 Long Plains Rd. Buxton, Maine. Burial will be at a later date. Online condolence messages can be submitted at www.mainefuneral.com

Walt’s family would like to personally thank Liz, Amanda and Hope at Northern Light for everything they did in Walt’s last days. They were such a comfort to us during this difficult time.
