Obituary

SPRINGFIELD ~ Muriel E. “Mémère” (Brooks) Couture, 89, of the Pine Point section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2019. She passed into Eternal Life at home in Springfield surrounded by all the memories she loved and cherished. She was born in Springfield on November 9, 1929, a beloved daughter of the late Gordon and Mariella (Young) Brooks. She was raised in the Winchester Square section of Springfield, graduated from the High School of Commerce and later moved to Pine Point, where she resided for the remainder of her life. Following high school, she was employed as an office clerk at the Massachusetts Mutual Insurance Company and later worked at the former Koffee Kup Bakery on State Street, both in Springfield. She worked for many years as a waitress at the former Abdow’s Restaurant, which later became Bickford’s Restaurant, on Boston Road in Springfield. She was a longtime communicant of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in Springfield. She was an avid knitter, card player and bingo fanatic. She visited the Connecticut casinos often with her dear sister-in-law and best friend, Theresa “Terry” Couture whom she often referred to as her sister. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Wilfred T. “Pépère” Couture who was Called Home on November 3, 2009. They were married on October 15, 1949 at the Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel in Springfield and were blessed with over 60 years of happiness together. She leaves her three loving children, Michelle M. “Micky” Smith and her husband, Michael, of Monson, Jerome W. “Jerry” Couture of Springfield with whom she lived and Cheryl A. Couture of Ludlow; her three cherished grandchildren, Kimberly A. Collins and her husband, Bill, of Jonesborough, TN and Ryan and Tyler Pinkham, both of Ludlow; her three cherished great-grandchildren, Brittany Alley and her husband, Dakota, and Logan and Tessa Collins; her precious great-great-grandson, Clayton Alley; her two dear sisters-in-law, Theresa Couture of Chicopee and Malvina Fitzgerald of Ludlow; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Couture and Brooks families. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also predeceased by her three dear brothers, William, Dick and Harold Brooks; and her four dear sisters, Ruth David, Marian Benson and twins Beverly and Shirley Brooks. Her funeral will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2019 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 7:45 a.m.), followed a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, 405 Boston Road, Springfield, MA 01109. Her Committal Service will follow the Mass at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. For those who prefer, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Road, Waltham, MA 02452.
