Obituary

Rev. Jerry C. Wilson, 89, of Irwinville, Georgia, passed away on the morning of February 4, 2019 at his home in Irwinville after a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Wednesday, February 6, 2019, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald, with the Rev. Tommy Land, Jr. and the Rev. Eric Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Big Creek Cemetery, Irwin County, with the Rev. Landon Alberson officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Tuesday evening at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.

Rev. Wilson was born September 5, 1929, in Ben Hill County, Georgia, to the late John W. & Eula Wright Wilson. He grew up in the Irwinville community, also known as the Irwinville Farms Project, with his brothers and sisters. He finished high school in Mystic, Georgia. After a job in Florida for a while, he returned home to farm and later joined the United States Air Force, serving his country honorably for 3 ½ years in the Korean Conflict. Following his service, he attended ABAC for two years. After graduation, he worked in Dawson, Georgia for a brief time. He would later work for Young Tractor Company and Stone Motor Company as parts manager and then worked in sales for Poole Chevrolet and Stone Oil Company. While working, Rev. Wilson pastored Baptist churches for over 50 years including: Dorminy’s Mill, Old Prospect, Bethlehem-Ben Hill County, Pleasant Grove-Wilcox County, Irwinville, and Rebecca. Along with all his journeys, he was an avid Braves fan, fisherman, and youth baseball coach. He was a member of Big Creek Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mattie Lou Dover Wilson of the home; their children: David & Cris Wilson of Sylvester, Vic & Lesa Wilson of Mansfield, Texas, Jon Wilson of Irwinville, Alex Wilson of Irwinville, Dale Wilson of Irwin County, Kay & Phil Mitchell of Wilcox County, and Chris & Christa Wilson of Chula; 22 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and siblings: Joy W. McDaniel of Canton, William “Bill” Wilson of San Antonio, Texas, Larry Wilson of Athens, and Judy Holyoak of Canton.
