Obituary

PORTLAND- Alice Angell, 67, of Portland died peacefully on the morning of February 2nd at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough after a short battle with cancer. Born in New York City on March 30, 1951, to Evelyn Ames Baker and Roger Angell, she lived joyful childhood years in Sneden’s Landing, Palisades, NY. She attended the Dalton and Stockbridge Schools, Boston University, and New York University, graduating with a masters degree in social work. Her young adulthood was spent in New York and Boston, with a brief stint in Kansas, and she went on to have a distinguished career in social service and clinical counseling, including youth and family training, community outreach, and private psychotherapy practice. She began a family first in New York City, marrying Richard Evangelista in 1982, and then Maplewood, NJ, where she and Rich raised two outstanding daughters. After a lifetime of happy summers in Brooklin, ME, with her parents and beloved grandparents, Katharine and E.B. White, and many cousins and friends, Alice fulfilled a dream of living in Maine year-round and moved to Portland in 2003, continuing to visit Brooklin as often as the seasons allowed. Time in Brooklin was the highlight of her life, and Alice will be remembered enjoying her father’s porch overlooking Eggemoggin Reach and Wells Cove, listening to gulls and porpoises and spotting seals early on summer mornings. Alice spent equal time sailing the Reach in Brutal Beasts, Beetlecats, Herreshoffs, Bridges Points, and any other vessel that offered her time on the water. Her best times always included good friends and a dog or two, the breeds of which ranged from dachshunds and bulldogs to labs and pugs, who could often be spotted on the roads near the houses in Portland and Brooklin. Alice is predeceased by her mother and her older sister, Caroline Angell, and is survived by her father, her brother, John Henry Angell, of Portland, OR, her daughters, Lily Evangelista of Portland, ME, and Laura Engel of Needham, MA, her son-in-law, Ted Engel, and the source of her greatest joy in her last year of life, her cherished granddaughter, Taylor Katharine Engel. Alice will be remembered for her sense of calm and her quiet introspection, and for her encompassing memory, we hope of a lifetime of love.

Private memorials will be held by her family in the coming months. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Southern Maine for their support and comfort of Alice in her final days.
