Ellie Jeanette “Polly” Bruce, age 85, of Chase City, VA, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2019. She was born March 16, 1933 in Charlotte County, VA and was the daughter of the late Clyde Compton and Bertha Ward Wallace.
She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary for 25 years. Polly was a loving, devoted mother and grandmother. She was a wonderful cook and anyone that came to her home never left hungry.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Edward Bruce, Sr.; two daughters, Evelyn Tharpe and Nancy Diane Pennell; son, Carl Edward Bruce, Jr.; son-in-law, Curtis Tharpe; brother, Earl Compton; and sister, Lucille Rockwell.
Polly is survived by three daughters, Judy Gail Bruce of Chase City, VA, Cindy Lynn McMahan and husband, Dwight of High Point, NC, and Robbin Elaine Fitzgerald and husband, Tim of Salisbury, NC; two sons, Danny Westley Bruce and wife, Vicki of Chase City, VA and Rex Allen Bruce and wife, Ruby of Chase City, VA; son-in-law, Wayne Pennell; Annette Darden, whom she considered a daughter; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her sister, Anne Philbeck of Raleigh, NC; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Lucy, Edith, and Shelia; and her devoted caregiver, Linda Hutchins.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m., Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the Newcomb Allgood Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Entombment will be private.
