Obituary

LEICESTER: Alice May (Podielsky) Kane, 72, of Leicester, died January 9 , at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester, after a courageous battle with breast and ovarian cancers.
She was the loving wife of John Robert Kane for 51 years. She leaves a daughter Cristin Lea Pitney and her husband John of Worcester, a son Jared R. Kane of Leicester, her mother Dorothy O'Shaughnessy of Falmouth, a brother Dennis Podielsky and his wife Jane of Falmouth, six adored grandchildren; Royal and Samuel Kane, Ryan, Morgan, Alex and Cassidy Pitney, a sister-in-law Peggy Kane, a dear cousin Tammy Marathas, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her step-father Thomas O'Shaughnessy.
Alice was born and raised in Brockton. She graduated from Brockton High School in 1964, and Brockton Hospital School of Nursing in 1967. She was employed at Brockton Hospital Ward D, OR and PACU from 1967 to 1979, and U Mass Memorial Hospital, from 1979 to 2014.
A Registered Nurse with a career spanning 47 years, Alice made time for many activities throughout her life: Holy Name Theater with her husband and children in the early days, the Lady's Guild of St. Aloysius-St Jude Church, Garden Club of Leicester, member of "Breast Friends Connection", the "Livestrong Program" at the YMCA and a book club for many years with a close group of friends. Always busy, she also enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting and cooking.
The loves of her life were her husband, children, grandchildren and family; traveling and vacations to Switzerland, Germany, Austria, England and Ireland in their early years; then Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, Florida and Hawaii with family and friends. Her favorite place on Cape Cod was Old Silver Beach where she went every chance she got!
Alice was grateful for her husband John, her children and grandchildren and all her wonderful friends. She would like to thank Faith and Jane at the Infusion Center of U Mass Memorial where she had her cancer treatments, Dr. Susan Zweizig and all her staff and all the personnel on the 5th floor South who cared for her so kindly.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, January, 15 from MORIN FUNERAL HOME, 1131 Main Street, Leicester with a Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Aloysius-St. Jude Church, 491 Pleasant Street, Leicester. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Leicester, Calling hours are Monday from 4:00-7:00 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Breast Friends Connection, 115 Millbury Road, Oxford, MA 01540.
