Obituary

Deborah Leah Kosub-Young

Debbie was born March 20, 1958 on the first day of spring, to James “Todd” Kosub and Rosalie Irene Miller at Foster Memorial Hospital in Ventura. She entered heaven on January 9, 2019.
She was a fourth generation Californian. She loved genealogy and had a rich family history, including related to Dr. Mudd, Colonel Beal, and a direct lineage to Charlamagne. She was in the process of joining the DAR.
Debbie loved her faith and parish, from the little Sacred Heart Church in Ventura to St. Thomas Aquinas in Ojai. She had a special connection with her cousin Sister Pat Ann Thompson CSC at Notre Dame
She was always proud of her family who worked and served at Villanova School, and had fond memories of her great grandmother’s orange rolls or eating a peeled apple on the back step to the kitchen. Her two great grandmothers, Terese Kosub and Margaret Thompson, as well as her Nana worked there.

Growing up she attended Meiners Oaks Elementary, St. Thomas Elementary, Matilija, and Nordhoff High School, class of 1976. She attended Ventura College and pursued classes in the financial and banking industry. By far, her favorite job was a dispatcher at Ojai PD. That is where she met Bob. When he went to apologize to her parents for asking her out, as he didn’t realize she was just twenty years old. The first time they met him, they called her at the police station and said she “needed to marry this man”. My wise Uncle Al suggested I do something else other than law enforcement to be able to have a sane family life, as one partner in law enforcement was enough. He was very right.

Adventures were had, and outings in High Sierras. The biggest joy came in 1986 when Andrew was born. The fun and excitement began. Debbie fought (and won!) a battle with ovarian cancer but could not return to work. She had the highest pleasure of being a stay at home mom. This part of life brought changes; as a volunteer for soccer, Cub Scout leader, mom catechism teacher, eucharist minister, lector and help to plan many church activities. There was fishing, frog catching, soccer, roller hockey, skate boarding, PTA activities and school events, then came motorcycle riding adventures and football. Such a blessing to participate with Andrew’s friends who are now life-long families and loved ones.

Debbie was active in school government, she was a member of the Ventura Business and Professional Women and the National Association of Mortgage Women as well as a volunteer for the Ojai Police Department. She was active for many years in the Ojai Independence Day Committee, serving as chair or cochair for four years.

Bob and Debbie were married for 38 years. In October of 2016, Andrew married Hanna, and they were blessed to get a wonderful daughter in law. She is also survived by her brother Todd Kosub of Standish Ca, nephews Ethan and Brandon Kosub (serving in the US Army) and great nephew Colton, all of Standish, CA. Other survivors are her loving family; sister and brother in law Sherri and Mark Dennett of Cape Cod, MA, her nephew Matthew (Carolyn and four children), niece Emily (Matt and their two children) and nephew Tim (Katy and their three children). Debbie had many cousins, aunts, uncles and friends as well who will miss her.

Family and friends are invited to visiting hours to be held on Thursday January 17, 2019 from 5 to 9pm in St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church, St. Thomas Drive Ojai, where a Most Holy Rosary will be recited at 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Friday January 18, 2019 in St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church, Ojai. Interment will be at 2pm in Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, 5400 Valentine Road Ventura.
