Edward J. "Tubba" Lowney, 82, of New Bedford died Monday December 19, 2005 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Dorothy F. (Forand) Lowney.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Daniel and Emma (Brennan) Lowney, he had lived in New Bedford all of his life. He was a graduate of Holy Family High School.
Mr. Lowney was Recreation Director and later became Park Commissioner for the City of New Bedford until his retirement.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army with the 38th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, and participated in the battles and campaigns of Normandy, the Rhineland, Central Europe, the Ardennes and Northern France. he was a recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign medal with 5 bronze Service Stars, the Good Conduct medal and the World War II Victory medal.
He coached many children in football, basketball and baseball.
Survivors include his wife; 2 daughters, Doretta J. Lowney of Taunton and Laureen A. Lowney of Dartmouth; 2 sons, Daniel 7 Lowney of Dartmouth, and Matthew T. Lowney of Boston; a brother, Jack Lowney of New Bedford; 3 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Catherine L. Donohue.
A Private Funeral Service was held on Wednesday morning in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park Street, New Bedford. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery.
